“Ocean Conservation” Marine Plastic Art Exhibition at Bowen Library

Back

Bowen Library, in partnership with Girudala Co-Op, will be hosting an exhibition of sea animal sculptures made from marine plastic debris and mounted on balsa wood. Girudala offers a centre based program that includes social and educational activities for elderly residents in Bowen. The sea animal sculptures were created by program participants as a result of their engagement in a creative and meaningful activity to open the conversation around ‘Ocean Conservation’.

The debris used in the sculptures was found on the beaches surrounding Bowen, as well marine debris collected by Eco Barge in Airlie Beach. This exhibition aims to bring greater awareness to the issue of marine plastic debris and its effect on the environment, together with the importance of reducing and recycling plastic waste.

The exhibition opens 10.30am on Wednesday, 7th April and we invite the community to meet with the Elders/Artists to discuss their artwork and participate in making your own creative piece from marine plastic debris.  For more information please contact the Bowen Library on 4761 3670.

Girudala is an Indigenous community hub offering an array of services such as Health, Youth, Housing and Aged Care to the Bowen community.
